The South Island Agricultural Field Day (SIAFD) is a non profit organisation and a sub committee of the Christchurch District Young Farmers Club. The committee organises an exhibition for the rural community every second year. For the period 1953-1989 the exhibition was limited to machinery only, but recently, to cater for the wider commercial requests, it has been extended to include machinery and services to the rural community. The SIAFD became associated with Lincoln University in 1975 when it used the University's farms. This arrangement was formalised in 1983 with the lease of parts of the Research farm as a permanent site that included semipermanent buildings, and electricity and water reticulation. The strong feature of the SIAFD that differentiates it from Agricultural and Pastoral Shows is the comparative demonstrations under working conditions. The SIAFD is the largest agricultural event in the South Island that is not an Agricultural & Pastoral Show. |
